In Metamorphosis Gospel, Laurence Fuller reimagines Franz Kafka’s iconic tale of alienation and identity as a mythic lament — a poetic sermon mourning the fall of a once-great man into the brittle shell of bureaucracy. Told in lyrical stanzas and striking visuals, this contemporary adaptation transforms Kafka’s quiet horror into a theatrical Gospel of decay.
At its center stands Balong, a charismatic figure once able to sway kings with song, now a hunched husk buried under management memos and shifting rules. As the feathers fall from his once-magnificent hat, we witness not just a physical transformation, but a spiritual exodus — a man devoured by the machinery of modern success.
What begins as a tale of promise and charm devolves into a harrowing chorus of voices — colleagues, critics, and family — each stripping away at the protagonist’s worth, replacing soul with systems, and song with silence. Through haunting repetition and withering judgment, the poem conjures a chilling collective indictment of those who falter under capitalist weight.
Fuller’s adaptation is at once a tribute and an elegy — to the artist, the dreamer, the worker — to anyone who has watched their light dim under the fluorescent gaze of expectations.
“Is he dust yet?” the chorus asks.
Not yet.
But the Gospel speaks to a system all too ready to turn brilliance into an Empire of ashes.
